King's Highway 400 - www.OntHighways.com
Highway 400 is the city of Toronto's major North - South highway link. It functions as both a high speed commuter road, and the major connection from Toronto to Cottage County. Because of its dual function, Highway 400 is at is busiest on Friday evenings during the summer months, when both commuters and cottagers are using the route.
Recently, the MTO has been extending Highway 400 along Highway 69 towards Parry Sound. The 400 designation now reaches as far north as Parry Sound, despite a short gap in the divided highway. This gap is commonly known as the 'Wahta Gap'. Construction is currently underway to twin and 'freewayalize' the Wahta Gap, but work is not expected to be completed until mid-Summer 2008. Construction is also underway to extend the 400 north to just north of Highway 559; this work will likely not be completed until sometime in 2010. Beyond these projects, although the MTO has begun studying extending Highway 400 northerly as far as Sudbury, no construction timelines or firm commitments have been made.
