Highway 16 was at one time the
major route from the 401 to Ottawa in Eastern Ontario. In the late-1990s
much of Highway 16 was twinned and converted into a new fully-controlled access
highway (Hwy 416). Highway 416 bypasses Highway 16 in the vicinity of Highway 401,
as high speed ramps were constructed linking the 416 to Highway 401 west.
The short section of Highway 16 was spared surrounding 401 due to its connection to the USA via the Prescott-Ogdensburg Bridge,
and to Highway 401 itself, as Highway 416 only meets Highway 401 at a partial
interchange.
Highway 416 also bypassed a section of former Highway 16 near Ottawa. This
section of bypassed Highway 16 reverted back to local control after the 416 was
completed, and is now
known as Ottawa Road 73.

Road Info: Highway 16 is in
immaculate shape for its entire length. It is also the only King's
Highway that I would consider to be overbuilt. Highway 16 is 4 lanes
divided from Leeds & Grenville Road 44 (which is the original Highway 16
routing) south to Highway 2. |
